The 2024 Understanding China Conference is held in Guangzhou from Dec. 2 to Dec. 4. During the event, former Australian Foreign Minister Bob Carr told media that Australia has ridden on the back of China’s economic growth. He noted that there are 30% to 40% of Australia’s annual goods and services exports to China.
Rencently, Sino-Australian economic and trade relations have shown signs of warming. On December 5, the Australian government announced that China had lifted import restrictions on two Australian meat processing plants. This move marks the complete removal of trade restrictions imposed on all 10 Australian slaughterhouses between 2020 and 2022, allowing the full resumption of red meat exports to China.
In response, spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce of China He Yadong confirmed that, since last year, through joint efforts, China and Australia have achieved positive progress on a series of economic and trade issues. This demonstrates that by adhering to mutual respect, fostering mutually beneficial cooperation, and strengthening communication and dialogue, the two sides can effectively address their respective economic and trade concerns.
Regarding Chinese companies investing overseas, Carr emphasized the importance of maintaining unique competitive advantages. “They will win if they're offering something different from their competitors,” he concluded.
